With the Sitecore Azure release coming up, I took a look back on the most frequently asked questions we have been having under the early adopters program for Sitecore Azure.

General:

What is Sitecore Azure?
Sitecore Azure is an extension module to Sitecore CMS, which converts and deploys your Sitecore solution onto the Windows Azure Cloud.
What changes will the Sitecore Azure module do to my solution?
Sitecore will not do any changes to your on premises solution. For the cloud deployment the installer will only copy a subset of the on premises solution, leaving out stuff like the Sitecore folder. Please referee to documentation for more information.

The database scheme that is running on the SQL Azure has small changes compared to on-premises version, to make them Azure compliant.
What is the price of Sitecore Azure?
Sitecore Azure is a free extension to Sitecore CMS. You will need Sitecore CMS licenses for all of your cloud based instances.
What ports will my on-premises server use to communicate to the cloud environment?
Sitecore Azure uses port 80 and 1433 for all cloud communication.
Where are the current Windows Azure Hosting center locations:
Currently there are centers in:

North Central US – Chicago, Illinois

South Central US – San Antonio, Texas

North Europe – Amsterdam, Netherlands,

West Europe – Dublin, Ireland

East Asia – Hong Kong

Southeast Asia – Singapore

Can I store my media in blob stores?
Sitecore core, does currently not integrate to blob stores, but custom logic can use blob stores.
Can I use Microsoft Content Delivery Network (CDN) with Sitecore Azure?
No, CDN is an extension to blob stores, and there is currently no out of the box integration to blob stores.
What are the Sitecore Azure requirements?
Sitecore Azure needs to run on an on premises windows 64 bit machine, with Windows Azure SDK v1.2 installed.
Can I have different content in the different Azure hosting centers locations?
Yes, every Azure hosting location will be setup as a separate publishing target in Sitecore.
Are there any limitations to what I can run in the cloud?
Sitecore Azure currently only supports content delivery setups, that uses only web and core databases. Any solution that is coded according to Sitecore scaling guidelines and using publish to distribute data, should be out of the box Sitecore Azure compliant.
Can I use Online Marketing Suite (OMS) together with Sitecore Azure?
No, the Sitecore Azure is currently not able to convert sites with OMS.

Security:

How does security and membership provider’s work in the cloud?
Sitecore copies only core databases security accounts the cloud. If other a security model is needed, custom needs to be developed for this.

Web role:

Can I control the web instance sizes?
Yes change the Service Definition file in “[website]\sitecore\admin\Azure\ServiceDefinition.csdef” value of property vmsize. Default set to Extra Large ( 8 cpu’s )
Will this run with only one Web role instance?
Yes, but in order to get the Microsoft SLA on uptime you need to run at least to instances. For small environments consider lowering the vmsize and run at least two instances.
How do I get new functionality and files to an existing cloud web role:
Just select the desired location in Sitecore Azure and click Web role Refresh Files. This will create a new webrole package, upload it to the location and update existing environment.

Database:

Why do i need to state and static IP address on subscription creation?
The static IP is used for the SQL Azure firewall.
Can I have multiple IP or IP-spans database firewall?
Yes, just state so on subscription creation.
Can I run my Sitecore Azure on my own Windows Azure Subscription?
Yes, do keep in mind that Sitecore Azure currently needs a subscription per region, due to limitation on one Azure SQL server per Windows Subscription.
Can I store my large media on the file system?
No, Sitecore Azure current only supports storage of media files in databases.

Now I have seen a lot of Channel 9 video’s and heard a lot of debates with Charles, so it was very fun to actually get to meet him in person. The interview was with Martin Ingvar Kofoed Jensen and I. We just sad right down with Charles and did one of these agenda free and casual interviews that Channel 9 are so famous for.

We ended up talking about LINQ, Composite C1 and relational data. This is a very large topic to try and cover but it I do able when you just take a random discussion point of entry and just go in to whatever direction that the debate takes you. It is actually funny because the things that ended up as a nice little tour around the Composite C1 DataFacade.

The interview will be aired on Channel 9 within the next 2-3 weeks. So stay tuned to Channel 9 or here I will link to it as soon as it is posted.

I spend yesterday at MDCC (Microsoft Development Center Copenhagen). The topic of the trip was “Where are programming languages going”. The talk started with Andres Hejlsberg starting up Turbo Pascal and doing a small loop example. Nostalgia like that is really something that can get a smile on my face. He off cause did this to prove the point, that programming style hasn’t really changed that much during the last 10 years, and the programming languages, is one of the slowest things in the information age.

Concurrency was quickly pointed out as the new obstacle that we as developers has to face, where in the past we could over look this due to many of us running on machines with one or very few processors. This is current a hard task to do. Now this is one of the where computer the runtime environment and compilers will help us in the future, but this is currently not doable mainly due to us developers over specifying our algorithms. So we have to shift from a very imperative to a more declarative programming form, for the runtime environment to be able to run concurrent. This shift of coding style also has the great benefit that it almost always is more compact and less code is more. One of the current best examples of this code style shift if LINQ. In a LINQ you do not find any information in how to query but only what and that really is the essence of the shift, going from How to What.

Steve Ballmer arrived in Denmark yesterday, so dropped in on us and just gave us a small talk on how he sees the future. This was done in true Ballmer (the true Ballmer style is: “energetic, energetic, energetic”). He threw old comment “The best stuff still to be developed” and he good old story about the insurance guy.

Other topic was the future mixing of static and dynamic languages and Andres showed of the new dynamic syntax in C#. This new feature is one that I am really looking forward to. This is very helpful in the web world and many places in very abstract environment (like Composite C1). Off cause this dynamic will be run as managed code but it will make integration to other languages much easier.

All in all, this was a good way to spend a Sunday and the small fill in by Steve Ballmer really makes me look forward for today’s speak at Radisson.

This morning at breakfast Martin and I debated today’s schedule. The whole day was reserved for Team Foundation Products. Now both I and Martin and both “loves” of WSTF, but we haven’t heard that about any new features that we liked. Actually we really haven’t heard about anything from them at all. So we both agreed that this was properly going to be the most boring day of all the days here.

But man those breakfast assumptions where wrong. The TFS team just haven’t been doing any public relations work on their upcoming features. But they will do so in the near future. So all TFS stuff we saw today is Classified but, there were just so much great stuff, that we ended up agreeing that this probably was the greatest day of them all.

I am looking so much forward to show off this stuff to the developers in Composite. We are going to have some nice Friday sessions in the near future. I will be sending invitations as soon as I receive the bits.

For those of you using Team Foundation and Scrum you should check out “Scrum for Team System” at http://www.scrumforteamsystem.com/en/default.aspx

We had an extraordinary launch session the Visual Studio Team, this was arranged due to a massive responsive from all of TAP participants on areas of stability and performance. This session was really fun, but the VS Team took a major verbal beating.

We are now sitting at the hotel and discussing all the great input we have had this week. Other than that is the topic preparation for the trip home tomorrow, more correctly jet-lag minimization. I vote for the solution go and get drunk and party all night. That way we will diffidently be able to sleep in the plain tomorrow and wake up in Copenhagen Saturday morning all fresh and ready for the weekend. Now I do not want to tell you about Martin’s suggestion, but I will let you know tomorrow witch one we choose.

The Silverlight team started the day, and they are getting to the point where the core on Silverlight v2 is getting useable, but they are really lacking behind in controls, and they still seem to keep their dual focus both targeting the Business Line Applications and RIA. This really does that you miss many of the controls for successfully doing on of these. But look like they will be there in time, but not within the next half year.

After that the ASP.Net Team boomed us with a lot of upcoming features, most of it was classified but ASP.Net Dynamic Data Control v2 looks very entreating for Composite C1, this really could become a powerful control for Composite C1 developers.

Today’s lunch session was great but, where 100% confidential we can’t even say the codename. But its very exciting to see something brand new ideas.

After lunch it was time to have a look at the Entity Framework v2. As everyone know both me and Martin loves O/R theory. So this was really joy full for the both of us. Now there is definitely some god stuff in there.

Now we have been running labs on a 7 day old version of VS10, and yes there are nice features in it, but it crashes more than often, but that properly how it is with “pre” CTP versions.

Today’s topics where:

· Silverlight

· ASP.Net

· (a secret thing)

· Entity Framework v2

· Data Services v2

At the end of the day we visited the Microsoft Store and got to buy Microsoft stuff at employee prices.

Now the American people like drive in’s and they got allot of them, today we even found a drive in bank. You couldn’t even walk in to it.
